This & That
1) AuctionWatch Credits User Fees after Thursday's Outage
By Ina Steiner

AuctionWatch promised to credit users' accounts after an 11-hour outage prevented images from showing on eBay auctions. AuctionWatch will credit 25 cents to users' accounts for each auction launched through AuctionWatch Sales Manager, Sales Manager Pro and Sales Manager Business Edition that closed on May 30 between 6:45AM and 7:00PM. For sellers using its standalone image hosting system, the company will refund all image-hosting fees that posted to users' statements on Friday, 5/24/02.

Thursday's outage was caused by a hardware failure, which prevented customers' online auction images from being displayed for most of the day. The outage affected over half a million eBay auctions.

AuctionWatch apologized to its users, and said it is "spending considerable resources internally to review what additional measures we can take to offer the highest levels of system stability while continuing to provide the most economical service available. We thank you for your continued support as we continue to dedicate every resource to supporting you."

2) The AuctionBytes Theme Song
By Ina Steiner

David and I appear on a Boston radio show on Mondays. "Calling All Collectors, The Gary Sohmers Radio Show" is now available daily on the World Wide Web and the Cable Radio Network http://www.warpradio.com/redirect.asp?ID=13921.

The show's producer, Tim Mello, created a theme song for our appearances on Mondays. Check it out at http://www.auctionbytes.com/auctionbytes.mp3. You'll need a media player installed on your computer to hear it, and the file is almost 400 kilobytes in size, so be patient if you're on a slower connection. David and I are just happy they didn't ask US to sing!!

Call-ins are welcomed and encouraged: 877-977-6100 Toll Free. Call to get a "psychic appraisal" of an item from the King of Pop Culture, Gary Sohmers, talk about collecting or discuss the auction industry. We'd love to hear from you. (Remember, we're only on the show on Mondays, but Gary has other excellent guests throughout the week.)

Metro-West Boston readers can tune into the radio to hear the show. The program is broadcast live Mon through Fri at 10 a.m. eastern time on WSRO 1470 AM. The show is repeated (on the Internet and on 650 AM radio) at 4 p.m.

Gary Sohmers operates Wex Rex Collectibles and also appears as an appraiser in Toys and Collectibles on the "Antiques Roadshow" on PBS-TV http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/roadshow. Tune into PBS on Monday nights at 8 pm.

BTW, David and I were featured in the latest issue of the Collector Online "Seller's Edge" newsletter at http://www.imakenews.com/onemade/index000015998.cfm

3) Book Review & Author Signing: 'Miller's Movie Collectibles'
By Ina Steiner

Rudy Franchi, author of the new book "Miller's Movie Collectibles," will be holding a book-signing and appraisal clinic on June 10 at BookSoup (8818 West Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood) starting at 8pm. They will also be doing free appraisals of movie memorabilia.

Franchi, who owns Boston's Nostalgia Factory http://www.nostalgia.com?ab with his wife Barbara, very kindly sent me a copy of their new book. It is absolutely beautiful! It's hardcover and filled with color photographs of movie posters. This is THE perfect book for movie aficionados as well as collectors. I found this book very hard to put down.

The book examines the world of collectible movie posters, citing current values (in U.S. dollars and British pounds), with history, terminology and trends. Rudy & Barbara have been poster dealers for over 30 years. They are appraisers on the PBS Antique Roadshow and operate the largest Web site dealing in original film posters. The Franchis have organized film poster auctions for Skinner and Christie's auction houses.

"The book we wrote is a late in life attempt to de-mystify this strange world and make it more accessible to the ordinary collector," Franchi told me. They succeeded wonderfully.

You can find "Miller's Movie Collectibles" on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1840005106/auctionbytescom
