This & That
1) Help! Question about Software for Postal Scales
By Ina Steiner

Lately, I've gotten a few letters about Pelouze, one of the major brands of postage scales. One reader informed me that Sunbeam no longer owns Pelouze; the company is now called Pelstar.

Another person wrote, "I'm searching for software for my Pelouze model es6/sc, the scale that I got with my long gone E-Stamp account. E-Stamp gave us all a program that would allow us to still use the scale, but after have some problems with my computer, I lost it. Would you know where to look for it? I tried Sunbeam, but they were no help."

Does anyone have suggestions on how this reader can obtain the software he needs? If so, please drop a line in the Packing & Shipping Forum at: http://www.auctionbytes.com/forum/phpBB/viewtopic.php?topic=1403&forum=13&0

2) Postal Scales Revisited
By Ina Steiner

Speaking of Postal Scales! Over two years ago (February 2000), I wrote an article about postage scales. http://www.auctionbytes.com/pages/abu/y200/m02/abu0008/s04 Although the article is out-of-date, you still can learn about different kinds of scales.

3) eBay PowerSellers Flex their Muscles
By Ina Steiner

Craig Solomon recently founded e-Powersellers.com, a site dedicated to eBay PowerSellers like himself. Craig said that some PowerSellers on a discussion board decided that they should offer discounts to each other through eBay. He decided to create the site to allow PowerSellers to post their eBay name, a link to their items, and describe the discount they offer to other PowerSellers.

"We are not trying to compete or work against eBay," Craig said, "in fact we intend to help bring more business to eBay. We are not supporting other auction sites, and we ask that all transactions that occur be processed through eBay."

4) Operator? New Service Gives Customers Free Phone Access to Sellers
By Ina Steiner

Call Links allows sellers to give customers a way to place a toll-free call to them, without having to reveal their phone numbers. There is a charge to sellers for this service. This is a new company with employees from Netscape and Microsoft. Expect to see improvements in the coming weeks as they vamp up the site, according to a company spokesperson. https://www.callcast.com/html/editlinks.cgi/?ab

5) Two Services Help Sellers Send Packages
By Ina Steiner

CargoReservations.com and FreightQuote.com can help auction sellers figure out the best way to send packages.

Using CargoReservations, you can post your shipping request and "sit back and relax" while quotes are pulled right on to your desktop. CargoReservations has assembled transportation service providers able to move goods on land, air, and sea. Oftentimes, these companies have what is called "less-than-load" leftover capacities they are looking to fill and willing to sell to you at substantial discounts. For example, a truck hauling computer screens from Philadelphia to Atlanta may only be half full. The leftover space on this truck is available at substantial discounts, since the trucker already has included fixed costs and overhead in the price of the initial load. If it just so happens that your shipment goes anywhere along this same route, you can be sure that the trucker will be interested in offering you a significant deal.

Another service, FreightQuote.com, began its service by specializing in less-than-truckload services for businesses. Its eBay solution has been customized to work with residential customers.

For people who don't know a lot about moving heavy items, FreightQuote.com spokesperson Julie Cirlincuina highly recommends they take the time to read the freight and packaging tips on the Web site. "Then, feel free to call and talk to real people if they still have questions."

7) A Collector's View of ''Community''
By Ina Steiner

Our friends over at the CollectingChannel.com sent me a link to a 2-part story about the eBay Live conference written by Nicole Ballard.

"If the current eBay is like New York City or metro Los Angeles, largely impersonal, easy to remain a stranger in, seemingly intent on bigger/better/faster to the neglect of those who helped make it a megalopolis, then CollectingChannel is, well, let's face it-CollectingChannel is Lake Woebegone, small town America at its quirky finest."

8) On the Lighter Side
By Ina Steiner

If you have 5 minutes and a sense of humor, this animated cartoon is an amusing satire on the "Kingdom of eBay." Thanks to a reader for sending it in. http://www.ioffer.com/feepay
