This & That
1) New Toys & Games Auction Site: PixieToys.com
By Ina Steiner

Former Chief Technology Officer at Carnaby.com has co-founded an auction site for toys. Leonardo Cunha and Gail Dunseath started PixieToys.com, which has no listing fees and "reasonable" final value fees.

"Our goal is not to become the "Be All-End All" auction site and marketplace. Instead, our main focus will be to service the niche markets of toys, arts & crafts, hobbies and games." http://www.pixietoys.com

2) AuctionProphet Changes Pricing
By Ina Steiner

AuctionProphet, a site that provides analysis of eBay performance, has restructured its fees. We previously reviewed this site in June at http://www.auctionbytes.com/pages/abu/y202/m06/abu0072/s02. Now, the service is pay-as-you go, with 10 free credits to start you off http://www.auction-prophet.com/fees.php. Try printing various reports with the free credits, and see what you think. http://www.auction-prophet.com/?ab

3) Temp Hides Fun, Fulfilling Life from Rest of Office
By Ina Steiner

If you've left the corporate life behind to pursue your passions, you'll enjoy this article in The Onion. http://www.theonion.com/onion3836/temp_hides_fun.html

4) Boston Area Stamp Show
By Ina Steiner

The 47th annual WALPEX philatelic show will be held on Saturday, October 19th and Sunday, October 20th at the Minuteman Science-Technology High School in Lexington, MA. This year's show theme is the 75th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh's solo transatlantic flight.

There will be 47 tables of stamp and cover dealers and philatelic exhibits, including special Spellman museum exhibit. There is no charge for admission and parking. http://www.nefed.org/waltham

5) PKBooks Offers eBay-Approved Book Appraisals
By Ina Steiner

PK Books has created an Appraiser's Network for book appraisals approved by eBay. The qualifications for becoming a PKBooks Network Appraiser are:

  • Have a minimum of 10 years in the book business;
  • Be a member of one or more of the following: the ABAA, the ABA, the ILAB, the ASA or various state and regional Antiquarian Book Associations

NOTE: This has caused some controversy. Some sellers are concerned there may be a conflict of interest on the part of PKBooks appraisers who are also eBay dealers. This does not necessarily mean there is a conflict, but remember, no appraiser should ever ask to buy the books she or he is appraising. http://www.pkbooks.com

6) FTC Unveils Mascot to Teach Safe CyberSurfing
By Ina Steiner

Commissioner Orson Swindle of the Federal Trade Commission unveiled an Internet safety and security initiative at the Privacy2002 Conference in Cleveland, Ohio, complete with a turtle mascot. Just as Smokey Bear helps prevent forest fires and Woodsy Owl teaches people not to litter, "Dewie the Turtle" will remind consumers to stay safe online and develop a "culture of security." http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/infosecurity/coninfo.html
