This & That: Online Auction Roundup
1) Image Theft Is a Growing Problem
By Ina Steiner

Reminder: AuctionBytes does not endorse the products and services featured in the "This & That" column, which often features new companies. Fraud is becoming widespread in the online auction world, and you should think twice before giving private information or User IDs and passwords to any third party.

Image theft is a growing problem, as discussed in the last issue (http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abu/y203/m05/abu0094/s04). Here are a few helpful resources:

About.com has an article on adding a text watermark to your image if you use Photoshop: "How to Add a Text Watermark Over a Photo in Photoshop 5.5 or 6.0," by Sue Chastain http://tinyurl.com/bywa

NetMechanic has an article about image theft: "Design Tip: Stopping Code And Image Theft," by Larisa Thomason, Senior Web Analyst, NetMechanic, Inc. http://www.netmechanic.com/news/vol5/design_no18.htm

To report a theft of your eBay image and/or description to eBay, go to (http://pages.ebay.com/help/confidence/vero-image-text-theft.html), sign in, and submit the offending auction number and explanation.

2) New AuctionBytes Forum for Silver Collectors!
By Ina Steiner

We're very pleased to announce a new discussion forum dedicated to the discussion of silver. John Leckrone will be moderating the new silver forum. He has over 2 decades of experience buying and selling sterling silver and silverplate flatware and holloware, which is his niche. John has been in the antiques and collectibles business from his youth and now makes his living selling online in both auction and fixed-price formats (http://www.hopkinsvilleantiques.com). Come into the AuctionBytes Silver Forum and join the discussion! You will learn about silver, how it was used, who made things from it and how to identify and care for silver. http://www.auctionbytes.com/forum/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=32

3) Ranger Online Monitors eBay for VeRO Violations
By Ina Steiner

Ranger Online now offers a dedicated service for property rights owners to monitor eBay's marketplace for infringements and help "eliminate rogue activity" http://www.rangerinc.com/channel/vero.

Also see information about another VeRO monitoring service called GenuOne: http://www.auctionbytes.com/pages/abn/y03/m05/i07/s02.

4) Win a Free Advanced Storefront on ePier
By Ina Steiner

ePier is giving away a free custom designed Advanced Storefront to the seller who lists the most items between now and the end of May as part of its summer series of promotions. James Kim, President of ePier, said traffic to the auction site has been steadily increasing. ePier was established in 1998. http://www.epier.com

5) Fraud Encyclopedia Online
By Ina Steiner

Les Henderson wrote to tell me that the Nigerian bogus check for auction payments has become very widespread. "Many states are reporting a surge in complaints while the banks continue to just charge back the customer the full amount." Les is author of "Crimes of Persuasion: Schemes, Scams, Frauds" and said his site is one of the largest, privately run, free sites on the topic of fraud in the world. It's an encyclopedia of fraud.
