This & That: Online Auction Roundup
1) Online Auction Users Association (OAUA) Elections & Meeting
By Ina Steiner

Reminder: AuctionBytes does not endorse the products and services featured in the "This & That" column, which often features new companies. Fraud is becoming widespread in the online auction world, and you should think twice before giving private information or User IDs and passwords to any third party.

OAUA is holding elections for the seven open seats on the Board of Directors. Elections will be held over 6 days beginning at 12:01 PM (noon) Pacific Daylight Time on August 28, 2003 and ending at 12:00 PM (noon) Pacific Daylight Time on September 2, 2003. The Annual Membership Meeting of the OAUA will be held September 4, 2003, at 5PM Pacific Time. http://www.auctionusers.org

2) Niche Auction Site for Chevy Corvairs
By Ina Steiner

Steve Makarits has designed and built an online auction site for Chevy Corvairs and Corvair related items. He has a Corvair photo gallery, Corvair message board and Corvair links directory. The site is slightly over 4 weeks old has 92 users signed-up. Steve advertises Vairbid using Google, a monthly email newsletter, PR, and plans to do some shows in the future. http://www.vairbid.com

3) eBay's ''Uncle Griff'' Writes the Bible on eBay
By Ina Steiner

Jim "Griff" Griffith has penned "The Official eBay Bible," a guide to buying and selling on eBay. This is an excellent book for eBayers. When it covers a topic, it explains it fully with lots of screen-shots and tips from Griff. It also has some great stories about eBay users.

A major drawback, however, is that it fails to mention many useful products and services, even from eBay's own partners and API-licensed vendors. (How could it not even mention Andale??)

I would still recommend the book, as it's up-to-date and very useful. Just remember to use it as a launch pad and go digging a little deeper yourself!

4) UK Auction Site: AvaBid
By Ina Steiner

We wrote about BlokeinthePub.co.uk last November, it seems to have disappeared. Here's a UK site that is free to use: http://www.avabid.com.

5) Items Wanted Forum
By Ina Steiner

We added a new area in the Discussion Forums for "Looking For" items: http://www.auctionbytes.com/forum/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=33 Thanks to Joan Wurmbrand of http://www.goodbuygirls.com for conceiving this idea and offering to moderate this "want ad" forum.

By Ina Steiner

Appraiser Gary Sohmers is hosting an auction of the estate of Jack Eames in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, on September 1. The first part of the auction is ephemera and books (lots and lots of postcards), the second part of the auction is antique buttons. http://www.allcollectors.com
