This & That: Online Auction Roundup
1) Spoof Email Contains Virus
By Ina Steiner
Reminder: AuctionBytes does not endorse the products and services featured in the "This & That" column, which often features new Web sites. (Anyone can set up a Web site.) Fraud is becoming widespread in the online auction world, and you should think twice before giving private information or User IDs and passwords to any third party.
********
Beware email containing attached files, even when it looks like it comes from a legitimate company. Spoof email was sent last week made to look like it came from PayPal. The email contained an attached file (www.paypal.com.scr) infected with the Mimail virus.
2) Bid4Assets Auction Site Holds Collectibles Extravaganza
By Ina Steiner
Bid4Assets is holding a special collectibles promotion for the month of November. During the promotion, Bid4Assets is lowering its listing fee from $25 to $10. The auction site said its upscale audience is looking for unique and quality collectibles as the holiday season approaches. Bid4Assets specializes in selling collectibles in the following categories: sports memorabilia, Thomas Kinkade art, classic movies, animation cels, figurines and more.
Sellers will get increased exposure for their items on Bid4Assets this month since the Collectibles Extravaganza is being heavily promoted on the Bid4Assets' Web site and partner sites. Commission fees still apply ($25 minimum) if the item sells. The promotion runs through the end of November. In order to qualify for the discount listing-fee, sellers must enter the promotional key UNIQUE when prompted during the listing process.

4) Sign of the Times?
By Ina Steiner
Is this roadside church marquee a sign that has even permeated the psyche of our religious institutions? http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/images/churchsignebay.jpg
No, it's actually a cool online church sign generator we found last week, and of course, David couldn't resist playing with it. http://www.aboyandhiscomputer.com/churchsigngenerator
5) Karp on Auction Templates
By Ina Steiner
David Karp, author of eBay Hacks, wrote an article about how to cope with eBay's recently redesigned auction item page. (Remember that new look introduced in July? http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abu/y203/m07/abu0098/s05#s01)
Karp says you should set apart your payment and shipping terms right in the auction description by putting each in its own little table. While this tip is written specifically for eBay users, it can be applied to descriptions on any auction site. Read this useful tip at:

6) AuctionSleuth Search & Snipe
By Ina Steiner
AuctionSleuth wrote to say they they offer searching and sniping services for eBay and Yahoo auctions. AuctionSleuth scans auctions and instantly notifies you with a pop up message, an audio signal or an email when it finds an auction that meets the criteria you specify. It can also send a message to your cell phone. AuctionSleuth searches for two types of auctions, "Buy It Now" and "End of Auction."

7) Deadbeatbuster.com
By Ina Steiner
Has anyone used deadbeatbuster.com? Chris Sanchez sent me a press release, it's a service along the lines of http://www.ebayersthatsuck.com for reporting bad auction members.
8) Department of Shameless Plugs: AuctionBytes Goes Radio
By Ina Steiner
You never know whom you might meet at eBay Live. Turns out one day I sat down at a table with the hosts of Entrepreneur Magazine's "Making Money on eBay" Internet Radio Show. They kindly invited me on the show last week. If you'd like to listen in (and have Windows Media Player), click on the link below. Skip ahead to the halfway point; due to technical difficulties, I didn't get on the show right away:

Thanks to Shirley Muse, Kara Gordon and Lee Mirabel for having me on their show.
And if you have Real Player, you can hear me on Public Radio's Marketplace program in a segment about eBay third-party services:

Scroll down to "eBay spawns an entire industry."
David and I continue to appear on Gary Sohmer's radio show each week as auction news correspondents. The show, "Calling All Collectors," is on the OSRN network http://www.osrn.com/biogary.html on Saturday mornings at 6 am.
Gary is the king of pop culture and appears as an appraiser on the Antiques Roadshow. You can read about Gary's upcoming auctions on his Web site at http://www.allcollectors.com.
And for Boston locals, Gary is appearing at The Comedy Studio in Harvard Square Wednesday November 26, 2003 8:00 p.m. He's a funny guy, so leave the rotten tomatoes at home!

By Ina Steiner
OpenOutsource provides links, services and information to service providers and outsourcers wishing to do business online. (Think eLance.)
