This & That: Online Auction Roundup
1) PayPal Policy Response to Phishing Problem
By Ina Steiner

Reminder: AuctionBytes does not endorse the products and services featured in the "This & That" column, which often features new Web sites. (Anyone can set up a Web site.) Fraud is becoming widespread in the online auction world, and you should think twice before giving private information or User IDs and passwords to any third party.

********

A pat on the back to PayPal for a change it made recently. When we received our quarterly PayPal statement, it no longer included a link to the statement. The email included the PayPal home page URL, but it was not clickable. It's important that companies recognize the dangers of including links to sign-in pages in their emails. This is something scammers try to take advantage of when they send hoax emails linking to spoof sites that attempt to steal users' identities. If users know they should never click on a link to a sign-in page in an email, but rather open their browser and type in the name of the site to sign-in, the world may become a safer place!

2) Best of the Antiques Roadshow
By Ina Steiner

The Antiques Roadshow will air two special programs containing "the best of" moments from the show. And on Monday, May 3, 2004, at 8 pm, PBS will air "Roadshow Greatest Finds: The Biggest Price Tags" ("Relive some of the most memorable and emotional discoveries of the series eight years.) http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/roadshow

3) DOUA Seeks eBay Live Sponsors
By Ina Steiner

The Disabled Online Users Association (DOUA) still has some sponsorship opportunities available for the eBay Live conference in June. Booth sponsorship is $500 and entitles you to one bag insert, your name on their booth banner and in all of their promo material. Title Sponsorship is available for $5000. Title sponsorship entitles you to all of the above plus your name on the DOUA banner as title sponsor and 30 minutes of speaking time at the DOUA Meet and Greet on Thursday evening. DOUA is also looking for a $2500 sponsor for the Meet and Greet in the Diamond Room of the Holiday Inn Select. Any donations of cash, product or services will be recognized by the DOUA. Contact Marjie Smith at sponsorship@doua.info for more information and be sure to check out their Web site. http://www.doua.info

4) Zoicks.com eBay Links
By Ina Steiner

In the last issue, I mentioned a seller Blog in my editorial called Knarf.ca. Another interesting and useful site I found recently is published by eBay seller Lesley Feeney. She's compiled useful resources and links, it's a good site worth checking out.

6) eBay Promotion Is in Question
By Ina Steiner

eBay put up a page advertising a promotion in its media category to be held April 20-21. The page disappeared over the weekend. If you read about the promotion on the eBay forums or in the AuctionBytes Newsflash article from Friday http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abn/y04/m04/i16/s01, please be aware this promotion may be in question. Here is a link to the page as it appeared last week: (Warning for dial-up users, this file is 300k and is a PDF file) http://www.auctionbytes.com/PromoAPR15-2004.pdf

You may quote up to 200 words of any article on the condition that you attribute the article to AuctionBytes.com and either link to the original article or to www.AuctionBytes.com.
