Reminder: AuctionBytes does not endorse the products and services featured in the "This & That" column, which often features new Web sites. (Anyone can set up a Web site.) Fraud is becoming widespread in the online auction world, and you should think twice before giving private information or User IDs and passwords to any third party.

2) LiveDeal Local Trading Site
By Ina Steiner
LiveDeal is a new "local buy and sell website" that launched in December. The site said it has 75,000 registered users and tripled its traffic in four months. A spokesperson said one third of the items posted sell for $100 or more, and they report that the average selling price of items was about $6,500 in April. "LiveDeal is perfect for big, heavy items such as cars, furniture, bicycles and more, as well as for the items you want to see, touch and examine, like antiques, collectibles, electronics, and real estate," she said. Because of the local aspect of the site, people generally meet and make the exchange in person.

7) u-pic Insurance for Packages
By Ina Steiner
I've heard nothing but good things about Package In-Transit discounted insurance for packages shipped via major carriers, including UPS and U.S. Postal Service. The company has been providing package insurance since 1989 and has been helping online auction sellers for 5 years. This is a rare instance of us using an affiliate link to recommend a service:

8) New Form of Credit-Card Fraud
By Ina Steiner
ScamBusters reports that identity thieves are now calling credit card holders and posing as fraud troubleshooters for major credit card providers. "They tell unsuspecting victims that they are investigating a potential fraudulent charge that has been made to their account, and they offer to help the card holder reverse the charge and get a credit." I'm not sure if this is a new scam, or an old one revisited, but it something you should be on guard against. You can read the whole article, "Credit Card Fraud and Identity Theft, A New Spin," on the ScamBusters.org Web site. (You can also sign up for their free email newsletter.)

9) eBayers See Red over Green Shipping Glitch
By Ina Steiner
An eBay glitch had sellers fuming when the shipping field in their auction descriptions read "free" instead of the actual cost. Sellers I spoke to had to absorb the cost or endure the fury of angry buyers. Read more here:

10) eBay Live Conference
By Ina Steiner
eBay's annual user conference is taking place in New Orleans at the end of June. If you register by May 31, the admission fee is $60, the cost rises to $70 on June 1. Hotel space is scarce from what I've been hearing. We also checked on cell phone coverage, here's what the convention center had to say:
"We do not have proprietary cellular service within the Morial Convention Center. The Convention Center has installed its own distributed antenna system and provides good coverage throughout the building for the following cellular providers: All-Tell, Cingular, Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon. We also have AT&T in the building but their coverage is not as good as the rest of the providers that are listed above because they opted to install their own distributed antenna system which does not cover the building as well as the system the Convention Center owns. We only support the cellular providers that are listed above."
As usual, we'll be covering the event with articles, photos and a Weblog on the AuctionBytes site. Here's a link to eBay's information page.
