AuctionBytes Soundoff: Letters from Readers

Ina,
I am a PowerSeller using Home Page Feature. You may or may not be aware, but eBay has just changed the format of the home page so that the Featured Items section is now much lower on the page and does not appear on 90-95% of the computer screens out there. Instead they have an advertising section for things like movies (Taxi right now) etc. Even on the largest screens, only 1-3 of the featured titles even appear. That means that our Home Page Featured Items are not really appearing on the eBay Home Page unless someone happens to scroll down!

Sellers I've talked to are getting a maximum of 50% of the sales and hits they used to, and some are down to 35% or even less of normal sales and hits! I finally got my system down so that I was making great money with home page featured. But even making 100% profit before, this now takes my sales down to 10% profit to 30% LOSS! Most sellers don't realize this is going on and are continuing to list. We aren't even competing against each other, now. We have been practically wiped off the board!

I have listed $3,000 in auction that are not even paying for themselves now (before I should have made $3000 profit). Normally, I would have had 30 sales by this time today. When I checked a few minutes ago, I had 6.

I wish I would have known this in advance because I would not have listed, but eBay did not warn us. They just changed the format. It not only hurts financially, but it hurts as a PowerSeller, because it feels like eBay is selling us out to advertising dollars.

Ina,
I ask that you please continue to follow the eBay billing issues. I am a Power Seller and am about to have my seller account suspended for non-payment of fees that are in fact paid.

This is my means of making a living. There seldom are responses from eBay concerning these issues. Responses that are received are usually nothing more than dance-around-the-question responses.

My daughter is also a seller experiencing billing problems. Familiarize yourself with the sellers' issues on the eBay discussion boards, Seller Central for one. This is not a situation of 1 or 2 sellers being affected. Please continue to follow this issue!
Thank you,
J

Hi,
Have you heard of Public Library Computers set to block the Ebay.com site??

With all the Hurricanes in Florida alot of Ebayers are without power. A friend of mine tried using the Public Library Computer in Casselberry Florida to access her auctions and relist items. The site was blocked!

Just wondering if this is a single community doing this or is it wide spread?

Regarding Newsflash article, "eBay Bars Sellers from Ending Auctions in Final Hours" http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abn/y04/m10/i01/s01

There is a pretty big loophole in this policy, as I see it. The "cancel all bids and end this item" feature will not be available, but the seller will still be able to cancel all bids one-by-one. I'm not sure whether they'll be able to end the auction once all the bids are canceled, but they could at least use the pre-approved bidder feature to prevent new bids.

Hi, Ina!
I'd like to add to this email. I am in CA and have had too many NPB in the last 3 weeks. Last week I was contacted by one who had bought 2 items from me, she said she was out of work in FL due to the hurricane(s) and could not pay. After I filed for my fees back and had released her from paying, I checked her bid history and found she was still buying on eBay. I was so mad, I emailed her for an explanation, her reply was, "It was not me, it was my stupid husband. I am trying to straighten everything out and I will cancel every bid. I am just working on it and will make sure he is no more able to bid."

I am still watching and waiting, but kicking myself for allowing this to not become marks on their account, because their bidding continues and I feel taken advantage of.

It's a shame paypal doesn't protect sellers too. Both parties should be protected equally. This is not the case. I've heard of buyers who have lost their livelihood because of often heavy handed actions of paypal. Many sellers wish there was something other then paypal out there so they too could feel safe.

Regarding previous article, "Oddcast Creates Animated "Pals" for eBay Auctions" http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abu/y204/m09/abu0127/s05

Dear AuctionBytes:
That has to be the most annoying service I have ever seen, bar none. I hate the talking ads on other webpages that have SitePal, like Bravenet. It has annoyed me so much that I have permanently turned off my computer speakers. I hate it. No ifs, ands or buts. Never mind that the third party link for SitePal at the bottom of the listing violates eBay's links policy, and the seller is at risk of having their listings pulled because of it.
Thanks, Mona

Hi Ina,
This is a FYI.

Perhaps eBay recently changed their policy regarding listing credits? I've never been denied listing credit for an error in a listing when it was ended within 24 hours of it being listed. In this case, the item was listed twice by accident.
