AuctionBytes Soundoff: Letters from Readers

Re: eBay Keywords Issues

Ina:
I was just trying to get an ad campaign set up and ran into some problems. I submitted a request to their Customer Support and got the following response. I wanted to send it to you because I was shocked to see that they are instructing me to disable my firewall in order to use ebaykeywords. I cannot imagine spending any amount of time in the internet without a firewall. I have asked them to provide me with an alternative solution but I am shocked to find out that ebaykeywords would require disabling our firewall in order to use their website. Just wanted to pass this on to you in case other readers get these instructions.
Jay

Follow-up from Jay:
I just got a reply from ebaykeywords support. Here is what they said:
"An alternative to disabling your firewall is adding the sites ebaykeywords.com and doubleclick.net as safe sites to your firewall. Please let us know if you continue to experience difficulties today. We look forward to working with you further."

Re: PayPal Holds Fee-Free Day to Apologize for Recent Technical Glitches

Ina,
Do they really think this will make up for what we lost? This was pretty much the last straw for us. We will be switching to a merchant account with a backup system because we have no idea how much business we lost. I know that we got several messages from customers who were under the wire and needed items shipped ASAP so we directed them to other resources we use including CheckFree.

There seems to be no end of problems when ever ebay touches something. You can't regain customers if their 1st experience with you is negative.

Why didn't they give us some lead time on the date (of the fee-free day)? We could have given customers a discount based on what we saved by not paying paypal fee's. Maybe a day in late November to help with the Holiday season.

Ina,
(It would) be nice if they offer it on a Sunday or whatever day most activity occurs. Thursday is okay day, but not great day for sales. Thus minimal investment on Paypal for publicity.

Dear Ina:
As you know, I am an avid supporter of you and yours so may I make a suggestion from a little mom and pop website operation? Could you research the best way for a little on-line business to hook up with someone that would let us accept credit cards? I get callers ordering my website items, but when I tell tell them I don't have facility to accept credit cards, they say they will mail the money and I never hear from them again. Paypal advertises they fullfill the need but none seems to know how to use them. Others want an arm and a leg. Perhaps other of your readers have the same problem.
Thanks,
Tom.

To Whom It May Concern:
I recently tried to sell two items on Ebay, this was my first time selling, so I first had trouble with Turbo Lister and had to relist the items because I had made some mistakes and wanted to correct them before any bids were made. Well, needless to say, Ebay charged me for all of the relisted items. Now to my way of thinking, I would have liked to have some actual human help, seeing that I was selling for the first time. But all that took place was a bunch of e-mailing back and forth, so finally I had to end the auction early because when I had changed to to a Buy It Now and removed the reserve my item was only up to $51.00 and I was asking $650.00 on an item that was appraised by Petretti for $1000 back in 1998. Does anyone know how to contact Ebay via regular mail and by a phone number that I can call. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thank you for taking the time to read my e-mail.
Sincerely,
Kathleen
