AuctionBytes Soundoff: Letters from Readers

Ina,
I read your article about eBay's new report and immediately checked it out. First of all it's free if you operate a Featured Store. I ran a quick report and almost had a grabber until I realized the report stated one months of eBay sales and 3 months of PayPal Fees in the same totals column. The eBay fees simply were not accurate. ...

Dear Ina,
I am a faithful reader of your newsletter. I have a problem that concerns dealers as well as buyers on eBay. I contacted eBay with no response. I list on eBay 6-8 hours nightly 24-7 (When eBay is not flat lining ) I find that every night, not just now & then, every night for several hours eBay is not available. Tonight is a good example. When I was forced to stop bidding, I tried to respond to the feedback questions. After completion, the "DONE" was not operating. Again, last night, I was forced to stop bidding. I got off line for 3 hours. I returned to find that eBay was still not operating. I gave up & went to bed. Needless to say, we as dealers & buyers are losing money. It doesn't hurt eBay to be off line, but it does to small dealers like myself who is trying to supplement our income. There must be an answer somewhere. I'm sure if there is, you will find it. Thanks for your time.

Hello Ina,
Love your site and newsletters, they are a great resource. I wanted to bring to your attention that eBay has moved the Home Page Featured (HPF) listings on their home page. Most screens now show only the first two listings at best and a viewer has to scroll down to see the rest.

I think this is going to have a tremendously negative impact for sellers using this feature. Any chance you can find out what others think, or if eBay is getting complaints or do a write up in your newsletter?

I have sent a suggestion to move the features back to a more prominent location to eBay already, but obviously the more they hear about it the better chance of a positive response. Clearly a dollar decision on eBay's part, that negatively impacts many sellers. Maybe a boycott of the feature is necessary if they keep HPF listings at the current location.
Cheers,
Michael

Hi,
I have recently bought and sold a few items on e-bay. I have recently found out that my wish to bend over backwards to avoid negative feedback was unnecessary. It seems that there is a common practice for some users to use many multiple sign ons and there is no way for someone transacting with them to discover the other ids they may be using. I have also been in communication with one member that claims that there is another member with over 100 sign ons, that uses them to trash her auctions.

The reason I began to investigate the feedback system a little, is the fact I had a recent sale where the winning bidder reacted to the fact I did not accept credit cards in a rather unhinged manner. Within the first ten minutes of the end of the auction she sent me 6 e-mails, seeming to disregard the ones I had sent her explaining about the credit card thing, and, here's the scary part, within those same ten minutes, requested my contact info from e-bay and started calling my house repeated and hanging up on my answering machine. (She confirmed this in an e-mail saying she got a "weird voice" when she called.)

She also commented on other things that were none of her business, such as the name on my e-mail etc.

As it turns out, I had made a mistake and was happy to correct it for my other buyers. I was new to pay pal and new little more than what I had read in the e bay community area, which turned out to be incorrect information. My error.

After this scary person chewed me out for making the error. admitted to calling and hanging up, (within ten minutes of the end of the auction remember) and seemed to know a lot about ebay which puzzled me, given the short feedback list, I started looking into the feedback and new id issues on ebay.

My multiple complaints to e bay regarding this buyer, and their giving my phone number out that quickly have been unanswered.

It is important that the general public, that may start to make transactions on e bay, be made aware the feedback system is very flawed. That there is nothing to stop someone from racking up multiple negatives (put there to warn others) then moving on to a new id. Or worse, have multiple ids at the same time for the sole purpose of harassing others. I have read some pretty scary things about some on the e bay site that have made all sorts of threats, including physical harm. My own particular experience was enough to make me think twice about listing more items, especially since learning that she may have had many ids and moved on when the negative feedback got high.

In addition to informing the general public about this huge flaw in the feedback system that e-bay claims will help you know what kind of person you are dealing with, I also feel that there should be a way for a person who has had in issue, such as mine, to see other ids for that person in order to have access to feedback listed there to truly be able to know the sort of person you are dealing with, as e bay claims the feedback system allows. That will be completely under e-bay's control though, and will not profit them, so I doubt that will come about any time soon. Thank you,
Rebecca

Editor's Note: All users should take any form of harassment seriously and consider filing reports with your local police department (and the harasser's) so they have it on file. Sellers should also file a complaint with eBay and print out and save all emails to document the problem.
