This & That: Online Auction Roundup
1) DealMania
By Ina Steiner

Reminder: AuctionBytes does not endorse the products and services featured in the "This & That" column, which often features new Web sites. (Anyone can set up a Web site.) Fraud has become widespread in the online auction world, and you should think twice before giving private information or User IDs and passwords to any third party.

********

I've never heard of this auction site, but they said they are now capping seller fees at $9.95/month. http://www.dealmania.com

2) Shipwire Gets Free Shipping Insurance from DSI
By Ina Steiner

Shipwire.com, a discount shipping service operated by LOC Global LLC, launched enhanced services for eBay sellers. As part of a relationship with DSI Insurance, a leading provider of discounted shipping insurance, eBay sellers can now print a shipping label from the Shipwire Web site, complete with U.S. Postal Service postage and DSI parcel insurance, on a plain sheet of 8.5" x 11" paper. The first $100 insurance is free to Shipwire.com customers. http://www.shipwire.com

3) Beware of Art Dealer Scam
By Ina Steiner

An art dealer says an elaborate fraud is being perpetrated against fine art and antique dealers and possibly collectors. A Russian (ostensibly) has been emailing dealers offering them a long list of paintings for sale and claims to be the owner of an antiques shop in Moscow. He says he is selling the paintings on behalf of a Russian diplomat. "This con artist is quite convincing and will produce photographs of the paintings, letters of recommendation from the Director of the "State Russian Museum", and scans of documents he claims he is preparing for Russian customs in order to release the paintings for your inspection and approval. He will ask you to send a bank draft or Western Union wire transfer of some sum in order for the work your are interested in to clear customs. ...In reality he is downloading photographs from various gallery websites, pretending he owns the paintings shown, and then offering them for sale."

4) eBiz Directory of ''Online Sales Specialists''
By Ina Steiner

eBay Powerseller Dana Motley has launched a new site that contains a directory of online sales specialists. "eBiz Specialists are independent registered members of the i-eBiz directory who provide sales, shopping, consulting, coaching, public speaking and training services to the public. Most services advertised on this site are contracted for a fee or percentage of the cost or sale of item(s) and are negotiated by each Specialist." http://www.i-eBiz.com

5) StopAuctionFraud.com
By Ina Steiner

A new site has launched for reporting online auction fraudsters, but like other such services, I'm not sure how the site owner can be 100 percent certain of who is telling the truth in a dispute. http://www.stopauctionfraud.com
