By Ina Steiner
Reminder: AuctionBytes-Update does not endorse the products and services featured in the "This & That" column, which often features new Web sites. (Anyone can set up a Web site.) Fraud has become widespread in the online auction world, and you should think twice before giving private information or User IDs and passwords to any third party.

Many of RingCentral's online merchant customers use Skype for their business calls, but the company said their customers did not even know about the recent Skype outage until reading about it online. Their phones kept on ringing because RingCentral allows customers to set a pecking order of how they want calls routed. When the Skype number did not pick up, calls were automatically routed to the next number on the list. RingCentral provides businesses with a single phone number to unite and manage all their communication lines (home, work, mobile, fax, email and VoIP) through a simple Web interface. The service has a base price of $9.99/month that includes a click-to-call feature for merchants to display on their websites.

3) New at Google Checkout
By Ina Steiner
Google said merchants based in the U.S. now have greater flexibility in communicating order fulfillment status to buyers. New API commands will enable sellers to ship and assign tracking numbers to individual items or groups of items. Sellers can also mark individual items as back-ordered, returned, or canceled. "Together, these capabilities give your buyers greater visibility into the status of their orders."

The Amazon Web Services Start-Up Challenge is a contest for entrepreneurs and software developers in the US. Applications are due on October 28, 2007. The Amazon judges' panel will choose five finalists, announced in November. Amazon will produce a video of each finalist to post on aws.amazon.com where the community can vote for their favorite start-up. (Some developers have complained in the comments field that this is limited to US developers only.)
