This & That: Online Auction Roundup
1) DSI Adds PayPal for Shipping Insurance
By Ina Steiner

Reminder: AuctionBytes-Update does not endorse the products and services featured in the "This & That" column, which often features new Web sites. (Anyone can set up a Web site.) Fraud has become widespread in the online auction world, and you should think twice before giving private information or User IDs and passwords to any third party.

DSI Insurance, a provider of private shipping insurance, has added PayPal as a payment method for their online, instant coverage program. Through the online system, businesses and individuals can purchase coverage for a shipment being sent via DHL, FedEx, UPS, the USPS, or almost any air, land, or ocean conveyance. The company said the insurance is provided at a substantial savings to the carrier-provided coverage and provides all-risk coverage for loss, damage, or shortage while in transit.

2) PayPal for International Shipments
By Ina Steiner

Before eBay Live, many questions came in from readers concerned about PayPal's new terms going into effect in July. Here's one such letter: "As I understand it, based on the new rules you HAVE to have the SAME policy for treating international / US buyers that use PayPal. Can I STILL allow require that items paid with PayPal be shipped to a CONFIRMED address ONLY???? (If that is still allowable, that means that only SOME international buyers in Canada, UK & Australia? can pay using PayPal, since no other country offers confirmed addresses for US buyers.)"

PayPal spokesperson Michael Oldenburg explained, "Yes, sellers will be allowed to require confirmed addresses for international buyers when this policy goes into effect. We recognize that this is an important factor for their business risk decisions. PowerSellers taking advantage of expanded seller protection, however, would not need to have a confirmed address to make the transaction eligible for seller protection."

However, in the fall, eBay is extending its PowerSeller expanded seller protection to all sellers. When that program rolls out, sellers will no longer be required to ship to confirmed address to be covered (see Lorrie Norrington's announcement, who writes, "just send the goods to the address provided by PayPal and keep proof of shipment.")
