I'll be in Georgetown, Delaware this week, covering the eBay/Craigslist lawsuit scheduled to go to trial on Monday. The relationship between the two companies has been adversarial for years. eBay acquired 28% of Craigslist through a former shareholder in 2004, but launched its own classifieds sites abroad and - in 2007 - in the U.S. And we're hearing eBay is going forward with plans to rename Kijiji, "eBay Classifieds," and integrate it into eBay.com.
eBay is alleging that Craigslist principals, Craig Newmark and Jim Buckmaster, breached their fiduciary duties by diluting eBay's economic interest in Craigslist by more than 10 percent, costing eBay a seat on the Board of Directors. Craigslist said its actions were reasonable and measured responses to the real threat eBay's actions posed to the long-term interests of Craigslist.
Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, and Craigslist's Newmark and Buckmaster are all expected to testify. I'll be posting regular reports on AuctionBytes as well as bringing you some color on the trial as it progresses.
Christmas Day is less than 3 weeks away. So far, online sales for the holiday period are up 3 percent year-over-year, and it appears that while more people are shopping online, they are spending less. The emphasis on discounted goods is driving sales but continues to put pressure on prices and on profit margins.
In today's issue, Julia Wilkinson introduces us to a new wish-list service called Lottay that launched a new way to give cash as gifts through integration with PayPal. Barbara Weltman finishes her two-part series on business closure by explaining how to selling your business for top dollar. And in time for the holidays, collectibles expert Barbara Crews from About.com has some great ideas for creating Christmas wreaths from small collectibles that might otherwise be discarded.
We've got our regular lineup as well, including First Item Sold Online, AuctionBytes This & That Roundup, and Letters from Readers.
