eBay Australia informed users of eBay's global layoffs through an Announcement Board post. The local Australian team will be reduced by 18 positions, but, the company said, "Unaffected by today's announcement will be existing local Customer Support and Account Managers who continue to be there to help you."
eBay released a press release Monday morning announcing it would lay off 1,000 employees and would cut several hundred temporary workers, as well as reduce open positions. It said the moves would reduce its global workforce by approximately 10 percent. The layoffs had been predicted last month in a Wedge Partners analyst report referenced by Barrons.
eBay had previously cut 125 workers in March as part of a restructuring move made by incoming President and CEO John Donahoe who took over from Meg Whitman. Among the many changes at eBay this year was the announced closure of its Live Auctions business at the end of the year, and the closure of eBay Express.
eBay UK also issued an announcement on Monday, but declined to say how many of its team might be laid off. It too tried to reassure users. "We would like to take this opportunity to reassure you that there will be no outward change to eBay.co.uk or to our existing Customer Support and Account Manager teams, who will continue to be there to help you in the run-up to the important holiday season and beyond."
There were no such announcements on the eBay Canada and eBay.com Announcement Boards.
