Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman tossed her hat in the ring for the 2010 gubernatorial race for California with the formation of an Exploratory Committee. She made the announcement on Monday on her website, MegWhitman.com.
While Whitman stepped down as CEO in March 2008 and resigned her position as Special Advisor in December 2008, she's been working with Jeff Randle, her campaign's top advisor, since 2007.
Whitman is calling on former eBay executives to help in her bid for governor. Henry Gomez, who headed eBay's public relations during Whitman's tenure, will work with Randle to develop the campaign organization. And Tokoni, a company founded by two former eBay executives, will develop Meg's Internet presence for the campaign. Eskander (Alex) Kazim and Mary Lou Song, who developed the eBay creation myth, founded Tokoni, and Henry Gomez and Rajiv Dutta sit on the Board of Directors. eBay founder eBay Inc. and Pierre Omidyar are angel investors in the company.
Whitman's campaign website borrows from eBay's slogan, "the power of all of us" in an invitation for visitors to share their stories on Tokoni under the heading "the power of many."
