Amazon recently launched additional micro sites focused on particular product areas. On Tuesday, it launched an Outdoor Recreation Store (www.amazon.com/outdoors), and last week, it beta launched AmazonWireless (amazonwireless.com).
The Outdoor Recreation Store is a single shopping destination offering thousands of outdoor gear and apparel items from brands including Altrec, Backcountry and Mountain Gear.
AmazonWireless offers cell phones and service plans, with a selection of phones from AT&T and Verizon Wireless. Amazon.com said it would be expanding selection and adding carriers during the beta test phase.
These are just the latest stores Amazon.com has introduced in recent years. In April, Amazon.com launched a site dedicated to the Xbox Live (www.amazon.com/xboxlive), and in January, it launched the Inauguration Store (www.amazon.com/inauguration) with products that included Barack Obama-related souvenirs and memorabilia. Micro sites that were launched last year include the Motorcycle & ATV Store (www.amazon.com/motorcycle); the Amazon Election 2008 Store (www.amazon.com/election2008); and the Indie & Art House store at www.amazon.com/indies.
In January 2007, Amazon.com launched in beta a site dedicated to shoes and handbags, but with its own brand - Endless.com. It has also launched its own private label brands, Pinzon and Strathwood (link), and earlier this month, Amazon.com launched its own line of cookware, "Tom Douglas by Pinzon" (link).
