The USPS is launching a new website to provide customers with the details of its proposal for a 5-day delivery, which it estimates will result in annual savings of $3.1 billion. The USPS Board of Governors approved management's request to move forward with its proposal and to file a request for an advisory opinion with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) on March 30.
Key elements of the 5-day deliver schedule proposal include:
Street delivery and blue box collections will be eliminated on Saturdays;
Express Mail service will continue seven days a week;
Post Offices currently open on Saturday will remain open;
PO Box accessibility will continue and bulk mail and drop shipments will continue to be accepted at facilities that are currently open.
The new delivery schedule is part of a USPS plan, Delivering the Future, announced on March 2 that also included a restructuring of the payment schedule the Postal Service is required to make to pre-fund retiree health benefits.
