Thanks to everyone who took the online payment survey last month. Here's a link to the results:

And a summary is being included in AuctionBytes-Update February 5th edition.

I never used bidpay when it was alive but I had a favorable impression of the service. The most interesting thing to me was the apathy about it's demise.
I started a google news watch on the word 'bidpay' when I read the news in December. Did you know that I've only received about a dozen alerts from google since then? And every single one of them was about an Auctionbytes article!
I don't know if this experience should be interpreted as accolades for Auctionbytes, the insignificance of Western Union, or just the continued decline of google.
Whatever the lesson, I appreciate the information provided by your service. It appears, that without your coverage, there would be no news on this subject at all! _________________ Web tools and utilities, database, php, perl

I continue to get people asking if there is a BidPay substitute, especially from countries where PayPal does not operate. No alternative has been suggested so far. I think it impacts global trading more than anything.

Ina,
Any idea of what the geographical location of the participants were as that will have some bearing on the commonly accepted payment methods. I know that many European sellers expect to be paid by BIC+IBAN bank transfer (since it's free of charges to them), while Australian sellers will use PayMate for their credit card acceptance. Canadian sellers have access to CertaPay, etc. - all regional payment methods that mostly don't work well for international sales previously provided through BidPay.
I will miss the occasional BidPay WU money order from my US customers but at least they still have the cheaper option of 7-11 or WalMart issued MOs, unlike customers in other countries. I deal with a number of good banks most of whom negotiate foreign bank drafts, checks, and money orders 'at sight' via a very large partner bank that specialized in international clearance. Low fees and good exchange rates, though slower than online transfer systems such as PayPal but with better fraud detection. _________________ Free eBay auction & PayPal fee calculators: http://auctionfeecalculator.com |
