What do you guys think?
I think for the community that eBay "proposes" to be a part of it would be a bad idea. However as the "800 lb auction Gorilla" it would definitely work.

Doesn't matter.
It's already blocked. Under the "Safe Payments Policy", anything not specifically allowed is blocked. |

You are right, so eBay could also just do nothing to "block" the GBuy initiative. Do you think it is in their best interests to block it?

eBay may be accused of monopolizing payment checkout if they only allow Paypal. Its bad enough they don't have merchant account integration in to the site, but that may change with eBay Express.
I think Google payment system is positioned more to work with merchants who are on Froogle. Think how PriceGrabber is the middle-man in transactions and processes the payment for the merchant. I think GBuy (if that is what it is called) would take a similar role. |

Ebay does not want a pi**ing contest with google. No one makes money when this happens. They will comeout and allow googles payment system as saying its safe to use. Their new policy was targeting sites like greenzap from moving into the market. _________________ James Christie

| I agree that they will allow it but because it will not be integrated into the auctions, Paypal will probably always be the preferred choice of sellers and buyers. Plus, I would guess a lot of small sellers will not want to deal with two payment systems and will stick with Paypal for the foreseeable future. However, if Google starts off free, you never know what might happen. |

I think the larger sellers will be the ones that do not adopt quickly. They have too much infrastructure to add a "new untested" payment type. Believe me, I know from my own experience!
The smaller sellers will do whatever the bidders ask in efforts to close more auctions. Simply becuase they are not invested in complex software systems that don't take too kindly to changes.

| chuck, if another payment system takes there will be plenty of third-party tools to help businesses integrate in to their system. |

Provided Google offers a better suite of anti-fraud tools than the one's responsible for the poor protection sellers have with PayPal, I doubt eBay is likely to block GBuy (unless they wish to face competition watchdogs in many countries). eBay managed to buy PayPal when there were competitors (of which most have since closed), and any attempt to exclude a competitor such as "do no evil" Google might not sit well with regulators. Google is no more a fly-by-night operation than eBay/PayPal is.
eBay has already backstepped and tacitly allows MoneyBookers to be listed as a payment method in eBay listings. However accepting payment via AuctionChex is prohibited - Eddie is appealing it I hope! _________________ Free eBay auction & PayPal fee calculators: http://auctionfeecalculator.com |

I think they will definately block it. Or at least make it hard to use. It wouldn't make sense for them to "embrace" it.
Would it? _________________ Want An eBay Store?

From what I have seen and tested with Google I won't offer it if eBay allows it. I opted out of this google thing early.
I have found it is better to keep the checkout as simple as possible with buyers. The more options you offer the more complicated it becomes.
I am going to stick with paypal. I have no interest at all in changing 17,000 listings just to add gbuy.
eBay will most likely make it difficult to use and probably block it. |
