Are they nuts?

I will have to opt for a merchant account, as I refuse to use PayPal....

But, how about the casual small sellers??? Seems like another scam to force people to sign up to PayPal...

Any thoughts?

All the more reason to open your own shop online. Little sellers on the way out.
Ebay logic, get rid of the sellers that made you, cater to the big guys, but when they decide to push their own websites who is going to be left?

Surely this will be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Not only is this restricting sellers, it is restricting buyers. eBay is now saying that you must have a bank account and/or credit card to purchase on eBay (unless you are able to make a face to face transaction). Now I know it sounds far fetched, that someone buying on eBay won't have one or the other, but I'm sure there are a few of them out there.
To support my point, I have construction equipment that I rent and lease to others. On one project, the main "money man" has a bank account of course, but his foreman, who earns $30.00 per hour and works up to 80 hours a week during the summer (I'm in MT) goes straight from picking up his paycheck to the bank and cashes his check. He has NO back account and NO credit cards. He occasionally uses my equipment on "side jobs" and I am always paid in cash.
I think eBay has stepped over the line legally on this one and I hope that some of the bigger eBayers will call them on it. eBay has only a marginal stake in this issue (other than the cash they rake in from PayPal) and little, if any, financial risk. It's not as though they collect the money and send it on the the seller (as Amazon does).
eBay needs to be taken down a notch. It was done to the Bell System, AT&T and others. With enough noisy from sellers and buyers this could be THE issue.

Just as a side note, the new policy does not apply to Motors, Business, and Real Estate.

Also, buyers can ask to pay by check or money order, sellers are just not allowed to offer those payment methods up front.

Its worth reading the detailed FAQ: http://pages.ebay.com/sell/August2008Update/OtherFAQ/index.html#3

What should I do if a buyer demands to pay with checks or money orders?
We know that some buyers will still want to pay with checks and money orders, even after this policy change goes into effect. When this happens, explain to your buyers the benefits that come with electronic payments:
More secure payments
Faster delivery of their purchases
More protection in case anything goes wrong.
Some buyers may be anxious about online payments or may not have a bank account. In these cases, suggest that they try using a prepaid debit card.

So now I'm susposed to be a salesman for PayPal !!!!

Don't care how they spin or twist it, it still isn't right. Just a money grab by ebay.

Ebay is so complicated now I cannot even work it much less look for the fine print.
I agree completely with Joe.
I have had people send me a check and cash in the mail with an item photo of a store item of mine as they are so gunshy online.
You even mention credit card it scares them. Asking people to only pay with Paypal is amazing to me.

Ebay is doing everything in its power to make sure that we conform to Pay Pal and soon to be Pro Pay. (Which in my opinion won't be long before they buy them out)

I do not agree with this policy at all.

I totally agree. eBay and PayPal are there to take all our money away! And that is totally not fair at all.

I try my best to use other payment methods, like Google Checkout, which is cheaper than PayPal.

I was also introduced to Mpayy through iOffer. It seems to work pretty well. If you sign up for Mpayy through iOffer, you get a $10 NEW ACCOUNT BONUS, which can be applied to your iOffer purchase or payment! Free $10, heck yea!!

How Can they Legally dictate how you can receive a payment?
Has anyone challenged this, brought suit?
I can't of course, as I am only small time.
Thanks
Ray

Hi, the way they word it is that you can't put in your listing that you take checks or money orders. You can email the winner and tell them you'll take chickens if you want. But that's how they will get around it.

I think is wrong to tell you that you have to take PayPal etc.

eBay doesn't actually dictate how you can receive a payment, only what payment methods you can advertise as accepting on their site. Once the sale is made you can take any form of payment -- even wampum -- you wish.

When we created our selling site we involved a number of eBay, and former eBay, sellers and looked thoroughly at what eBay and other sites did well and what they did poorly. One of the key things we learned, and something that has become the foundation of our philosophy, is that most serious sellers want a venue that stays out of their business, that allows them to deal directly with their own customers in a manner (legal, of course), that meets the needs of their business, and that allows them to develop and follow their own business plan. We've stuck to that concept and the successful sellers who stay with us have appreciated it and use it to their advantage.

eBay is, of course, much more successful than we are so, perhaps, most people really don't care about that. We're not changing, though! )
